QUALITY COFFEE is fundamental to the Peet’s experience. It also drives our commitment to care for the people and places involved in growing the coffee we roast. We believe that where the land is respected and the people who farm it live well, the coffee is, quite simply, better. For decades, we’ve collaborated with producers and other coffee supply chain partners to source our coffees in a responsible manner, support coffee farmers through training, and donate to organizations working in coffee communities around the globe.

At Peet’s, we’re driven to source the highest quality coffees for our customers. In doing so, we strive to learn about the realities facing the growers from whom we purchase. Our Direct Trade program and Certifications help us gain these insights, and point out where we can help. This is an area of work that we continue to evolve along with the specialty coffee industry.

Coffees from farmers with whom:

  • We have a direct relationship and visit regularly in person.
  • We negotiate coffee prices directly and pay a premium for top quality.
  • We collaborate on initiatives that support the people, communities, and natural environment surrounding their farms.

Certified coffees have been evaluated against social, environmental, and economic standards during production and processing. Certifications are one way we can recognize the concern that farmers show for the people and places involved in growing and processing coffee. We focus on sourcing coffees that carry USDA Organic, Fair Trade, and Rainforest Alliance certifications.

Many coffee farmers have the potential to offer amazing quality coffees, but for a variety of reasons they lack the means to achieve this goal. Through training in agronomy and business skills, farmers can improve quality, obtain higher crop yields, and secure price premiums. We believe these are some of the key conditions that lead to resilient, prosperous coffee farmers and communities. We offer training focused on the topics below.

We support training for smallholder farmers focused on increasing coffee yields, reducing production costs, and improving milling and processing techniques that ensure quality.

Coffee farming is a business and we want to help farmers run viable, profitable enterprises. As such, we work with smallholder coffee farmers to offer training in accounting, record keeping, and banking.

Part of the Peet’s ethos involves caring for our partners, communities, and each other. In that spirit, we invest in the people and places behind our coffees, contributing to projects and organizations that support coffee farmers, their communities, and the natural environment in which they reside. We work with non-profit organizations as well as initiatives managed by the people who grow our coffees. Below you’ll find more information about some of our current non-profit partners.

TECHNOSERVE, works with entrepreneurial people in developing countries to build competitive farms, businesses, and industries. Peet’s and TechnoServe have worked in the coffee-producing areas of Latin America and East Africa since 2000 to support coffee farmers through a number of programs, including training in quality and yield best practices. Peet’s Uzuri African Blend came to fruition through collaboration with the organization.

WORLD COFFEE RESEARCH, or WCR, is a non-profit research organization supported by the coffee industry and focused on ensuring the future of coffee in light of challenges such as climate change, plant disease, and pests among others. Through its research, WCR is working to support higher quality coffee, more productive coffee farms, and a sustainable livelihood for farmers. Peet’s is a founding member and continuing donor to the organization.

COFFEE KIDS provides training, mentoring, and seed capital to young coffee farmers to help them start businesses that respond to climate change, migration, and other challenges they face in the ever-changing coffee industry.
